As I packed my gear for tomorrow’s race

I saw her lying still on the ground

I kneeled down to see her face

Her whimpering, the only sound.

She wouldn’t move, she wouldn’t respond

I told my family her time had come

This was the only moment we’d bond

Up until this point, I thought she was dumb.

She used to run away from me

this time was different as I touched her head,

she didn’t have the life in her to flee,

her heart was beating, but she was dead.

I couldn’t sleep that night, I’d wake up in tears.

to watch Life escape us, is something we all fear.
